Choosing transport
Open vs enclosed vehicle transport: which do you need?

Most people overspend on enclosed transport, and a small number badly underspend on open. Here is how to tell which side of the line your vehicle sits on.
What open transport actually exposes you to
On an open transporter your vehicle travels in the weather, the same as it would if you drove it. The realistic risks are stone chips on a leading edge and road grime, not damage. For a daily car, a lease return or trade stock, that is an acceptable trade for a materially lower price.
When enclosed is worth paying for
Enclosed transport earns its premium in a few specific cases.
- Freshly painted, restored or concours vehicles.
- Low ground clearance where a covered trailer's ramps and winch are gentler.
- High-value or irreplaceable vehicles where any cosmetic risk is unacceptable.
- Vehicles you would rather not be visible in transit.
Access matters more than people expect
Enclosed trailers are taller and longer. Narrow lanes, low branches, underground car parks and tight urban streets can force a nearby meeting point. If your collection or delivery address is restricted, mention it at booking so the transporter plans for it.
A simple decision rule
If the vehicle is insured for less than a typical family car and drives normally, book open. If a single stone chip would genuinely upset you, or the car is low, rare or newly finished, book enclosed and treat the difference as insurance.
Common questions
- Is enclosed transport safer overall?
- It reduces cosmetic risk from road debris and weather. Loading and securing standards matter far more to overall safety, and those are the same on both — which is why licence, insurance and equipment checks matter more than trailer type.
- How much more does enclosed cost?
- Expect a meaningful uplift over the equivalent open price on the same mileage band and collection window. The exact figure is shown side by side before you book.
